DJ SWINGSETT
Born in Niagara Falls, NY, then growing up in Colorado, Germany, Long Island NY, Dayton, OH, & DC/Virginia, and Colorado again, this veteran DJ/Producer has been drawn to and influenced by Soul, Jazz, Funk, Dub and Dance from the late 60's, 70's and early 80's
His influences continue up to the newest future music, pushing boundaries, and keeping it Soulful & Jazzy. An active, full-time "DJ's DJ" operating in NYC (mostly Brooklyn) from 1992-2007, now based in Colorado. He released his 1st Music production in 1995 on Ubiquity Records (What's Cookin' Vol 1). Many more releases followed on this impactful label (LP "Dog Leg Left" w/ DJ Wally), and also labels such as Samz Jointz (w/ DJ Wally), Om Records, Liquid Sky Music, Home Entertainment, Sirkus UK (w/ Lisa Shaw), Dope On Plastic! UK, EastWest Germany, The Agriculture, and Asphodel, to name a few.
He also co-produced official Remixes for Whodini (w/ John Warrin, for Jive Electro), Twilight Circus Dub Sound System (w/ Takuya Nakamura for M Records), The Streets UK (w/ Takuya & Lisa Shaw for Vice/Atlantic) and Billie Holiday (w/ Takuya for Legacy/Columbia/SONY), among many more.
While in NY, he co-founded and ran 3 of his own labels from 1999-2006 with his first Wife, Lisa Shaw, and label & production partner John Warrin: Ism Records (Broken Beat & NuJazz), Esho Recordings (Deep, Soulful & Jazzy House), and Ism'assive Records (Jungle/Drum&Bass).
From 1993-2007, Swingsett DJ'd extensively for Giant Step and Konkrete Jungle events in NYC, LA, New Orleans, and Miami, as a Resident or supporting DJ, and also held residencies and one-off events at most major & minor Manhattan + Brooklyn clubs such as: Nell's, Wetland's, S.O.B.'s, Save The Robots, The Supper Club, The Limelight (The Chapel + H.R. Giger Room), TWILO, The Sound Factory, Drinkland, Bar 6, Nublu, CENTRO-FLY, The Knitting Factory, FUN!, 205 Chrystie, The Bank, Shine on Canal/TriBeCa, Tavern on The Green @ Central Park (3 Summers in a row), NY PS1 MOMA Museum of Modern Art (twice!), + many more.
DJ Swingsett was also the 1st American DJ to play as a special guest in London with the UK's Gilles Peterson, Ben Wilcox & Straight No Chaser Magazine's "That's How It Is" monthly in London (in 1997 and 2000!), and enjoyed hundreds of bookings stretching over 4 decades throughout the US, CAN, UK, Europe, South Korea, Japan, Thailand, and New Zealand.
Additionally, he was supporting DJ & booked with artists ranging from Gil Scott-Heron, The Cold Crush Brothers, GURU's Jazzmatazz 'Live', De La Soul,
Lisa Shaw (many bookings as a duo from 1995-2003), DJ Spinna, Mr. Scruff, Jimmy Smith, DJ Smash, Turntables On The Hudson (multiple- w/ Nickodemus & Nappy G), Reuben Wilson, and Incognito, DJ Krush, Skylab, Miguel Migs, Joshua Iz & Diz, Gene Ferris, Twilight Circus Dub Soundsystem, Roni Size Reprazent 'Live', LTJ Bukem (twice), Shy FX, Soul Slinger (Liquid Sky), DB, Charlie Dark/Attica Blues, Orin 'Afronaut' Walters, Daz-I-Kue, Domu, Bugz In The Attic, Jimpster, Ray Barretto, Coldcut (Ninja Tune), DJ Food, Mark Farina, The Groove Collective, Tortured Soul, + many more.
Currently, DJ Swingsett continues to mix music at clubs and special events in Denver, NY, and SF predominately, and has several studio collaborations to release music on several Indie Dance/Electronic labels, including Inner Tribe Records, Australia and SF based Finley Tuned Music, while occasionally
curating DJ and live band events.
Since 2015, he has played and hosted shows regularly on KGNU Radio and various guest spots for several of the station's shows: The Afternoon Sound, Electronic Air, and Dub Palace, hosting about 3 live on air shows per month. He also has upcoming guest spots and features on Dublab LA, The Lot Radio NY, and more.
